Mentoring & Workshops

ISCE provides both mentoring and workshops or seminars to assist faculty in developing skills and experience in proposal development.

Dr. Karen Roberto and the ISCE staff are available to meet with both new and established faculty to discuss research ideas, and if appropriate, to set up regular meetings to monitor progress and provide ongoing feedback. For more information, contact Karen Roberto.

Workshops & Seminars

ISCE also sponsors a number of workshops and seminars throughout the year. Some of these workshops provide a series of ongoing, interactive sessions with development of draft proposals and feedback, while others are one-time seminars on topics of interest to social science faculty. Examples of some of the annual workshops ISCE typically offers include:

  • NSF CAREER Award Sessions, co-sponsored with the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences - Spring semester
  • Proposal Development Institute (PDI) mentoring groups - Spring semester
For more information on these workshops or any others ISCE offers, contact Yancey Crawford.
Examples of one-time sessions include the February 2020 ISCE-sponsored event featuring Dr. Arthur Lupia, assistant director at the National Science Foundation and head of the Social, Behavioral and Economic (SBE) Sciences directorate, who presented in Arlington, VA and via Zoom to the Blacksburg campus. Dr. Lupia's presentation discussed the value of the social sciences in a polarized age and recent changes in the SBE directorate.

Stay tuned for announcements on our website for future one-time events and presentations.
